Tapestry for Women, Inc. was formed as a not for profit corporation in Tennessee in November 2019. Even though the entity is young, the Vision and Mission of Tapestry is over ten years old. Tapestry for Women was founded by a trio of women who have been going into the Hamblen County jail to disciple, mentor and encourage the female inmates there since 2010. Beginning as a “Jail Ministry” inside the jail, Tapestry has evolved as a wholistic approach to assisting formerly incarcerated women as they navigate the challenges of re-entering society and returning to, or becoming, productive and law-abiding citizens. Driven by the desire to combat the societal and personal expense of recidivism and the detrimental effects it has on the physical and emotional health of the repeatedly incarcerated, Tapestry’s founders, along with a team of volunteers and their Board of Directors, strive to provide an environment where those challenges can be overcome. Scores of formerly incarcerated women have been assisted over the years with countless resources, physical, emotional and spiritual. The team of women who make up the ministry team that is Tapestry for Women have been a network of support and accountability for any woman who has sought them out upon leaving incarceration, or when returning to the Morristown area after completing a rehabilitation program. Throughout the years, countless women have been assisted with clothing and hygiene items, food, transportation, furniture, temporary housing, shower facilities, ID and driver’s license retrieval, financial needs, life skills training, employment preparation, as well as referrals for health and dental care, social services, education, parenting classes, sobriety meetings, counseling and much more. All are encouraged to attend church services and Bible studies of their choice, and provided transportation and materials, if desired. Even with that plethora of resources and assistance, a consistently major challenge still remains for these women in the area of affordable housing within a sober environment. Tapestry for Women, Inc. has been formally established for the purpose of raising awareness of this need and the funds necessary to purchase, maintain and operate such housing.
